Toyota Holiday Commercial

While at the movie theaters waiting for my movie to start, there was the typical ads and trailers, but one in particular caught my attention.  This one was the Toyota holiday commercial, however, after watching the commercial, I was utterly confused about how it had anything to do with cars.  The commercial starts with a sad song and a woman driving with her husband down a road.  The husband says that he's heard that her parents are upset.  She answers saying that the tree meant a lot to them.  This brings into the equation that they are probably driving to a tree that in some way was damaged or cut down, because otherwise there would be no reason for her parents to get upset about it.  The only Toyota products are the trucks that are being driven to cut down the tree.  The commercial continues and they take pieces of the tree back home to make a table out of it.  While the husband makes the table, the main character (the lady) looks at family photos of her parents by the tree and reminisces about the memories that her family had at that tree when she was a little girl.  The commercial jumps forward a little bit in time and the table is finished.  Her parents come to their house and see the table.  It turns out that the table was made out of the piece of the tree that they carved their names in.  The grandma starts crying and then they all start hugging and eventually eat dinner and then a phrase pops up saying: "Let's bring everyone closer this holiday." with the Toyota logo at the end.  All the while, sad music is playing that picks up beat and pace at the end of the commercial.  Although Toyota products were barely a part of the commercial, the commercial gets to the viewer on a personal level.  The introduction of the family immediately makes the commercial relatable and then the predicament of the tree and the parents makes you feel sorry for the old couple and introduces a need for nurture, because believe it or not most people feel the need to nurture old "cute" couples.  The commercial puts the viewer in a sad mood at first but that eventually turns to happiness as the colors in the commercial change from grays and darker blues to yellow and red.  Because the color scheme gets brighter, the viewer is happier and sees the Toyota logo at the end while feeling happy.  The viewer understands the personal role that Toyota had in the people's lives in the commercial and in a way want that intimacy in their lives as well.  Overall, I think this commercial was successful in convincing the viewer that Toyota is a car company that will not only give you quality, but they will care about you personally as well.
