Miss Representation
The documentary: "Miss Representation" focuses on the message that social media portrays about women and the roles that are "appropriate"for them to fulfill in society. Unfortunately, the things that media tells women are negative and result in a largely patriarchal society that considers itself a democracy even though equality doesn't seem to take priority especially when it comes to race and gender. Although I was already aware of a lot of the problems discussed in this documentary, I enjoyed watching it because it expanded my knowledge of the problems faced by women that are successful or who aspire to break from traditional views and values. What I found fascinating, however, were the statistics that were presented, which really brought into perspective the struggle of the female sex. For example, one in four girls experience teen dating violence. This data means that not only are women increasingly seen as objects that are to be possessed rather than people to share a life with, men are being taught at a young age that it's okay to treat women poorly because they are superior to them. Like the video states, if the status of women wants to change for the better, changes not only need to be made in media messages, but also, changes in the way that boys are raised need to occur as well. If boys are continually taught that they are better than girls, they'll only grow up, continuing to believe in this false philosophy, and making this world worse for women. I also agreed with the concept introduced in the video that more women in power need to be shown on social media and T.V. Like the video says, if the only women that are seen by young girls on social media and T.V. consider their bodies to be their best asset, girls will grow up thinking so. In order for women to rise in social status and gain respect, media and television programs need to portray women as the powerful human beings that they can become. If these images are the ones that we flood our youth with, they will grow up to have respect for women and themselves. If we don't change the things that we prioritize in a woman we will continue to live in a fake democracy where we will continue to think that everyone in America is treated equally.
Once I watched the film, I immediately saw that the concept that women are regarded as objects and a possession is actually a real thing in society. In movies, this is extremely prevalent because we see that when the protagonist of a Disney movie is a women, they usually are there just to find love and romance while when the protagonist is a man, they are out to seek adventure and discover new things. I think that this is a really interesting concept you touched upon. Another really interesting topic was women on television as anchors and hosts. I was stunned when the movie covered peoples reaction to Katie Couric's appearance as a woman anchor. They said things like they only focused on her legs and what she wore. Like you said, men are being conditioned to think that woman are only classified as objects and their outer appearance. I thought that you covered those topics really well in this blog. Nice Job!
